Dryer repair in the Los Angeles area

A dryer rarely dies all at once. It starts taking two cycles instead of one, then three, and the room it stands in gets hot. Royal Appliance works on dryers where they stand, gas and electric, and the first thing the visit settles is whether the machine is the problem at all.

What people call about

If one of these is what yours is doing, it is worth a visit.

  • It runs a full cycle and the clothes are still damp.
  • The drum turns but it does not heat at all.
  • It takes two or three cycles to dry one ordinary load.
  • It squeals, thumps or grinds while the drum is turning.
  • It will not start, or it starts and stops after a few minutes.
  • The laundry room gets very hot while it is running.

What the $75 visit establishes

The $75 visit is for separating a broken dryer from a blocked one, and those are not the same problem. A dryer works by moving hot air through the clothes and out of the house, so when the vent run is packed with lint or crushed behind the machine, a perfectly good dryer takes three cycles to do one load and runs hot doing it. A heating element, a thermal fuse, a thermostat, a belt or a blower wheel all look much the same from the doorway. What is actually wrong is established at the machine, and the fault and the repair price are stated before the work starts.

When replacing beats repairing

Dryers are mechanically simple, which is why they are worth repairing more often than not — belts, rollers, elements, thermostats and fuses are ordinary parts with ordinary labor. The answer changes when the drum or the cabinet has gone, or when a machine has been running hot long enough that one failure follows another. One of the reviews on this site is from a customer whose dryer was repaired rather than replaced, and it is on the reviews page in his words rather than this page's.

What people said afterwards

7 of the 15 published reviews are filed under "Clothes Washer or Dryer Repair or Service". That category covers this machine, and the source does not record which appliance each review was actually about — so this is the category, not a claim about the specific machine.

  • He’s one of the cleanest guys I ever hired. He worked in a timely and professional matter and saved me from buying a new dryer.

  • Ricky went above and beyond to ensure my repair was done in a timely and excellent manner. He ordered parts, talked me through options, and demonstrated he had my best interest in mind. He was open about the options and creative about what could be done and how. After various trips for parts and hours spent on the project we came up against an impossible situation. The washing machine bolt was stripped and cutting it would mean leaving a part of it in the washer transmission, which would ruin the washing machine. So, Ricky communicated that he wouldn’t be able to fix it and that he was sorry about the time invested in the project. While cleaning up the workspace I felt a ping on my phone and I discovered Ricky had refunded me the fees I’d paid him to evaluate the appliance, EVEN AFTER HOURS OF WORK, miles of travel for parts, and even INSTALLING SOME NEW PARTS. I was worried about hiring a new appliance technician, but I’ll be calling Ricky for any appliance needs!

Dryer repair — questions people ask

Is the venting something that gets checked?

It is part of telling what is wrong. A dryer that needs three cycles is very often a venting problem rather than a broken machine, and finding that out is the point of the diagnostic — it decides whether the machine itself needs anything at all.

Gas or electric — does it change the booking?

No. Both are the same category of work. It is worth saying which one you have on the booking form, because a gas dryer and an electric one fail in different places and it changes what gets checked first.

There is a burning smell. Should it keep being used?

No. Turn it off and stop running it. A burning smell from a dryer usually means lint somewhere lint should not be, and that is not something to keep testing. Book the visit and leave the machine off until then.
