The $75 visit is for telling those apart, because a dishwasher that does not clean and a dishwasher that does not drain can share one cause and can just as easily not. Spray arms, the filter, the drain pump, the inlet valve, the door seal and the household drain line all produce symptoms that look alike from the front of the machine. Is a dishwasher that will not drain always the dishwasher's fault?
Not always. The drain hose usually ties into the same line as the kitchen sink, so a blocked disposal or a partly blocked sink drain can leave water standing in a dishwasher that is working perfectly. Which side of that line the problem is on is one of the first things the visit settles.
Does the dishwasher have to come out from under the counter?
Sometimes. It is fastened to the underside of the counter and connected to the water supply and the drain, so some faults are reachable from the front and some are not. Either way the machine is left connected and working.
What about the smell?
A dishwasher that smells is usually holding water it should have drained, or holding food in the filter. It is worth pulling the filter out and rinsing it before booking anything — if the smell goes, that was it. If it comes back, the drain side is worth a look.
